Poverty and Homeless Action Week

On Thursday 4 February, a Soup Day was held at Princess Avenue Project. The room which held the event was lined with photos of homeless people from around the world. A reminder to one and all of just how bad it can get for some people.

Some of the Adullam residents shared their stories from when they were on the streets. Of just how they had to survive, the cold, leftover food bins, take away food boxes with leftovers in, the stale food - nothing else was around. The few places they could go for food and shelter on odd times. Though some could not understand how some people in either poverty or homelessness could just let themselves go so badly. Miguel mentioned how some places don’t have areas for homelessness to go. While some cannot handle the situation as well as others.

While he spoke I then understood how some people are born fighters. The others just get so ill and depressed they make their situation worse. Though he also mentioned the poverty stricken in Haiti. They too are fighters, but their situation was made worse by nothing they did. As their homes and livelihoods were taken from them in a huge earthquake.

This brought about a discussion on how some people in the room thought it was silly to build a community or town near things like volcanoes or in areas that earthquakes happen. The reality is, it is land no-one owns so an easy place to set up home. While in some countries people place cheap housing in all areas to make more money.

By the end of the event, stories were told and we had a collection for Haiti with clothes and money, as well as carried goods for charity in England.

So when you’re out and about being happy, take a moment to think of people who are worse off than you.
