Residents at the Bethany Project in Leicester, take part in the making of a DVD for the Right Here, Right Now Conference.

Championing a partnership approach to youth homelessness.

On Tuesday 1st July 2008, I am very proud to report, that a number of young women from the Bethany Project, Leicester participated in the making of a film recorded onto DVD. Commissioned by Leicester YMCA and Leicester City Council this film explores the experiences of young people living in supported accommodation in Leicester. Special thanks to all the residents involved: Kirsty, Sarah, Sykes and Alice. Not forgetting Nadia who volunteered, with Sarah, to "greet and meet" delegates attending the conference.

The level of involvement, by our residents, has not only raised confidence, self esteem and self awareness but has led to residents desperate to engage in more activities of this nature. We are currently in discussions concerning parent advisory boards and supporting people forums. Residents have found their voice and are keen to have an opinion about the services offered to others who are experiencing or facing homelessness.

Here are just some of the comments made from our residents following their participation in the making of the DVD:

"During a User Involvement Session with our worker, Kirstie, I was asked if I wanted to be involved in the making of a DVD. I was unsure. I was shy but the other residents talked me into it. I was happy I took part in the making of the film. It has really boosted my confidence. I had a great day. I really enjoyed myself. I am glad Kirstie talked to me about this".

"I recently participated in the making of a DVD regarding my own personal experience of youth homelessness. I was really nervous at first but now I am full of confidence. I volunteered to show organisers around Bethany Court and my own flat, which I call home".

"When Kirstie first told me about the idea of making a DVD for the Youth Homelessness Conference I was really excited and definitely wanted to take part. Once the day arrived I nearly chickened out! I am glad I didn't. It was a great experience and a great idea for resident involvement".
